The Psychology of Session Planning: Techniques that great trainers use to engage their audience and drive learning outcomes

12 May 2023
ONLINE via Zoom Meetings

Please note: This event has now reached capacity.

Overview

Facilitator’s guide? Session plan? Presentation plan? It doesn’t matter what you call it, it’s what goes in it that matters.

A good session plan includes strategies that address two separate, but related areas, engagement and learning. In essence, a good plan answers two key questions throughout the session:

  • How will I engage my audience in this concept, idea or skill?

  • How can I teach this concept, idea or skill in a way that gives the learner the best opportunity to use it later?

Drawing on principles from evolutionary psychology, behavioural economics and the cognitive sciences, Tony will share many of the techniques he uses to engage his audience while promoting learning and retention of the course content.

Specifically, we will take a look at:

  • Techniques you can use to encourage engagement, interest and optimism early in and throughout your course.

  • Activities that encourage the formation of mental models and long-term memories.

  • Structures for designing and communicating experiential learning activities.

  • Processes for incorporating the Worked Example Principle into your sessions.

Throughout this session Tony will share practical examples to support each of the concepts. Will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each example and how to minimise any risks. We’ll be using break out rooms, group discussions and a bunch of other interactive activities to get you involved in the content.

You will leave with specific activities that Tony uses throughout his programs, of which you can apply immediately or adjust depending on what you are presenting.
