This session explores the elements of a simulated environment and how they can be brought together to create a realistic workplace experience. We consider the opportunities, people, places, processes, products and physical resources that students interact with in simulated environments to demonstrate performance in industry conditions and to an industry standard.
Remaining focused on the goal of vocational education to prepare students for success in the workforce, this session will explore the process of defining the problems presented by different units of competency and practical examples of different solutions.

Ever been caught off guard when your training package suddenly changes?
As VET Practitioners in schools, we are all very aware that delivering vocational training and assessment is a continually evolving practice. Sometimes, just when we think we have all our scheduling, tools, resources and methods as perfect as perfect can be, the training package changes!
At these times, we can get a little bogged down with what seems to be a list of ‘more things to do’ on top of what is an already very busy teaching schedule. And, of course, you would be right! This is the world of VET – one that is forever moving and changing to reflect the needs of the industry areas it represents.
So, what can we do to make our lives a little easier, and a little more prepared?
To ensure our students have the best possible outcomes, we must be prepared for updates and have armed and ready, a clear, step-by-step process that isn’t ‘larger than life’ when it comes to transitioning the students and the training they are receiving.
In this session, Melanie Alexandra will step through some key strategies to assist your approach, planning and implementation of training package requirements as and when transition expectations suddenly arise.
Key topics covered include:
Having held a variety of roles within the Academic and Vocational Education and Training (VET) sectors over the past 25 years including trainer and assessor, Head of Faculty, Program Manager, RTO Manager, and Head of Quality Assurance, Melanie has won awards for excellence in teaching and learning, and outstanding leadership of young people in schools. In recent years, Melanie worked as a Senior Lead Auditor for the Queensland and Curriculum Assessment Authority, conducting regulatory audits and registrations against the current VET Quality Framework and Standards for RTOs 2015, and has continued to provide support services to Registered Training Organisations as a VET Consultant in her own right. Today, Melanie provides support, guidance, consulting and mentoring services as the Education Services Advisor of Vocational Education, Skills and Training for Independent Schools Queensland.

How confident are you in the vocational learning journey of your students?
Schools provide opportunities for their students to undertake nationally recognised training across a range of differing partnership arrangements and agreements. Whether we ourselves deliver on behalf of these external providers at our own school, or whether we hand our students over to receive their training externally, the fact remains that these young learners are still our responsibility.
The student’s learning journey is of paramount importance to schools, therefore the learning experience and, ultimately, the quality outcomes that result from their training, must be effectively monitored as progress is made across the course content.
The journey itself begins with the advice, guidance and information that we provide to our students. Whether mandated as part of the Standards or simply supporting the study selection process, the messages schools communicate to students are key to shaping important learning decisions that affect the next steps in their study and careers.
So how confident are you in the services being provided?
During this session Melanie Alexandra will explore the fundamentals of monitoring effective training services in schools and, how using transparent and collaborative practices can instil confidence across the learning journey of students and for all involved.
When it comes to validation, many VET teachers ask “why do we have to do this”?
In addition to being a key requirement of the Standards for RTOs, validation plays a critical role in ensuring the quality of your assessment processes is maintained.
Central to this is ensuring the assessment materials you have developed (or handed to you) are being fully and properly implemented.
This session will outline the benefits of a well-designed validation program not only for the school, but for students as well.
Join David Garner for this session as he unpacks the reason for and purpose of validation, the required time frames, and how to maximise validation outcomes.
David Garner is the Principal Consultant at [consult dg] and provides advice, development and research to the VET sector. He has worked in a variety of compliance related roles for over 15 years. He also currently works in staff roles for two RTOs delivering a range of courses to overseas students in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
Most recently, as the General Manager Regulatory Operations for the Australian Skills Quality Authority, David was responsible for implementing ASQA’s regulatory strategy nationally.
David was also Director, Training Quality, in the Queensland Department of Education and Training. Prior to joining the Queensland department in 2005, David worked in and managed training providers for many years. David also has been active in sports administration for over 30 years.
This session is designed to provide teachers / trainers with strategies to re-engage students studying VET (can be applied to other areas of the curriculum). You are generally the students last hope for success in the school environment, so the purpose of this session is to set you and your students up for success using easy to implement tools and strategies. You should leave the session with information to assist you in creating a calmer more engaging environment.
The focus will be to provide in-site from a student’s perspective (what they need to enable them to engage and learn, including the psychological barriers they need to overcome) and provide tips on how to reengage the students by changing attitudes and mindset (both the trainer and student), along with practical advice on implementing the strategies.

So! You've taken on, or been advised that you have, a new role: RTO Manager. Is this an additional 'hat'? Or is it a new 'hat'?
Perhaps you've been in the role for a while and are looking for reassurance that you're on the right track.
In this session, we'll look at some ideas for managing the RTO Manager role so that it becomes a systematic set of activities that just has to be monitored.
We will look at a risk approach to RTO Management with a focus on:

This session is designed to get you thinking about how you might be able to cluster your assessment (or to ensure your current clustering maintains the rigour of assessment).
Clustering multiple units of competency for assessment is a great way to reflect the requirements of the workplace via the assessment experience and to maximise the opportunity for holistic evidence gathering by the assessor.
It also provides opportunities to maximise the efforts and efficiency of both the student and the assessor, reducing duplication and the time taken to complete units. A well-developed clustered assessment (or group of assessments) can yield quality evidence of a student’s competence.
But what are the risks of clustering units of competency and how do we manage them to ensure that each unit is fully addressed?
Join Paul Pellier for this session designed to outline the benefits and challenges of clustering assessment. Attendees will gain some valuable insights about clustering whilst ensuring that the rigour of assessment is retained and how mapping tools can be used to achieve this.
