Validating Your Online Assessment Tools and Processes

3 February 2021
ONLINE

So, you have moved your assessments online, but how robust are they?
Did you just move them into the workplace, or did you write them with online on the mind?

Economists and futurists suggest that the international workforce has technologically progressed decades in just a few months. Australia is no exception with remote working and online learning becoming more accepted. Many thought this would be short term, however, the events that have led to this have seen a new level of comfort in the digital space and a new concept of remote environments. Suddenly, remote is the new normal.

Traditionally, when we validate our VET assessments, we are ensuring they comply with the principles of assessment and rules of evidence. Our obligation to comply with these requirements do not differ when we move towards an online mode, we don’t just ignore what is too hard. We need to recognise the added layer of consideration when we relinquish some of the perks of the face to face environment, we need to think a little differently.

This detailed and interactive webinar will explore the questions you need to ask when validating your online assessments. We will investigate the deeper layers relevant to guiding the success of students outside of the classroom and focus on those aspects distinctive to online practices. We will drill down into the elements of student induction and support, including when and where we need to provide information to students to manage their expectations.

The importance of the assessor’s digital capability will also be investigated, and additional requirements under WCAG, reviewing the features within your templates and platforms to accommodate a range of student needs.

Finally, we will discuss the importance of assessment design and getting it right the first time to ensure students get a clear picture of their requirements from the beginning. This includes what they need to do to collect the evidence, not just complete the task.  This will also include all the information to support students beyond assessment tools that contribute to the learner experience and how this leads to compliance with fairness, flexibility, reliability, and validity of the assessment process.
